Caledonia Community Players Announces Full 2010 Season

Caledonia Community Players will present Children of Eden in June

From a Southern hair salon to the jungles of Africa and then back in time to the beginning of human civiliaztion, the Caledonia Community Players 2010 season brings you to every corner of the Earth and to the depths of time.

Starting in February, CCP will present Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias, which Circle Theater has already announced will be part of their summer 2010 schedule. Then in March we travel to the jungle to hear the tale of Mowgli for Vera Morris’ adaptation of The Jungle Book.

The big news from this announcement is that CCP will present in June Stephen Schwartz’s musical Children of Eden. The composer’s name should sound familiar, even if the show itself is not. Schwartz is, of course, the Tony-nominated and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist of the smash Broadway favorite, Wicked.

But you may not recognize the musical. Children of Eden takes its story from the book of Genesis and recounts the tale of Adam and Eve and their children Cain and Abel in the first act, and the tale of Noah and his family in the second. Originally produced in 1991 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London, Children of Eden has proven popular among Schwartz’s fans and among regional community theaters.  According to the publisher Musical Theater International, Children of Eden has consistently ranked among its top requested lisences.

Resident director Scott Erno and returning music director Kelsey Kohlenberger are both excited to bring this often overlooked, but sure to be crowd pleasing musical to the Caledonia stage. Auditions will be held in April, and the crew is hoping to attract an outpouring of hopefuls to create another successful show following the rousing success of last year’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Be sure to check the Audition Calendar for more information about upcoming auditions, and be sure to keep checking back here for more information about these and other shows in the Grand Rapids theater community and beyond.
